Santa Fe Island holds rock that is older than any other exposed surface in the Galápagos — volcanic basalt dated to roughly four million years, formed before Isabela or Fernandina existed. The island covers about 24 square kilometres. Nothing on it rises higher than 259 metres. It is small, dry, and ancient.
The English name is Barrington Island, after Admiral Samuel Barrington. Whalers and buccaneers knew the anchorage in the eighteenth century. Charles Darwin never landed here. The Santa Fe land iguana, Conolophus pallidus, is paler and larger-spined than its cousins on Santa Cruz. The Santa Fe rice rat survives in the arid scrub, one of the last endemic rodents in the archipelago. A giant tortoise population once grazed here too. It was hunted out by the early twentieth century; its shell fragments remain in the collections of the Charles Darwin Research Station.
